Argentine Trains Allows Pet Travel on Popular Route

Argentine Trains has introduced a new policy allowing passengers to travel with dogs and cats on the Buenos Aires – Mar del Plata route. Learn about the fares and conditions for this pet-friendly service.

Argentine Trains has enabled travel with dogs and cats on the Buenos Aires – Mar del Plata train. The new measure has been in effect since March, and now passengers can travel to the coastal city with their pets, provided they meet the requirements set by the authorities. This new modality allows each adult passenger to travel with only one pet and only between the terminal stations; that is, if boarding at Plaza Constitución, you must get off in Mar del Plata, or vice versa. The passenger must arrive at the pre-boarding stage in advance, as the health and operational control is carried out before boarding the train. The current fares for traveling with dogs and cats on the Buenos Aires – Mar del Plata train are as follows: First class: $32,000. Pullman: $38,000. Pet ticket (dog or cat): $77,500. The animal's transport is paid for as an additional ticket, independent of the passenger's fare, and has limited spots per train formation, so it is recommended to purchase in advance. To be able to travel with pets on the Buenos Aires – Mar del Plata train, Argentine Trains requires compliance with a series of mandatory conditions: Only one dog or cat is allowed per adult passenger. The pet must travel inside a closed carrier. The carrier must have a maximum base of approximately 48 cm by 45 cm. The animal must be over three months old. Present a valid health certificate from a veterinarian. Present a valid rabies vaccination certificate. Carry a health booklet or supporting documentation. Arrive at pre-boarding between 2 hours and 45 minutes before departure. Transport is only enabled between terminal stations. The service has limited spots per train formation. It is not permitted to board or alight at intermediate stations -such as Chascomús and Lezama, to name two- with animals. The transport must be done inside a closed carrier throughout the journey.
